Review:
I feel I should let everyone reading this know my inherent bias in favor of this movie. I have seen eight eight p.m. films from Clint Eastwood as director and as the vast majority of them, and would have a good number of them (my average score for 28 films is 7.9). But something felt off for Gran Torino based on the trailer. I read it as Eastwood tries to be badass again, trying to be Dirty Harry again. Gran Torino is not. Walt Kowalski may have similarities with Dirty Harry, and can be read as a much older version of Harry (his part), but it is distinctive, memorable character of its own, and Id go so far as to say that it is one of Eastwood's best performance, and one that gives a chance to show off his dramatic and comedic chops.Im would argue that Gran Torino is a perfect functioning of the younger supporting cast. It did not happen. In fact, some are just plain bad moments, but the film works in spite of its shortcomings. This scenario is probably written with Eastwood in mind (I'm not sure behind-the-scenes details on it), and it shows. He perfectly captures Kowalski. The film is surprisingly funny, which is not captured well enough in advertising. Its absolutely hilarious at times (see Kowalski tried to make one of Thao by teaching him how to talk and men), and Eastwood handles changes in tone brilliantly. When the film is a dark turn towards the end, I sat on the edge of my seat in suspense, fully aware of where he was going, but mesmerized by Eastwood's tour-de-force direction. This is an artist of his prime as an actor and as director.Whether or Gran Torino will be held up as one of Eastwoods great movies remains to be seen, and the film feels like it would be good for more visi ; increasing. Characterization is strong and not simplistic at all, could argue that Kowalski is just another grumpy war vet, but Eastwood's beautiful, nuanced performance as well as some neat little touches in the script (especially towards the end), which I will discuss in detail to avoid damaging anything (and it's really fun to watch the film unfold, holding Eastwood film moves at a great pace included) will prove that wrong. The film still works on another level as a deconstruction of Eastwood's picture. I do not mean that as a negative, it just adds to the film as a character strength study. Its more intimate than Eastwood's film another movie this year, Changeling, and also to a lesser extent than many of his other films, but just how ambitious the many ways. This is not a politically correct movie grumpy old racist suddenly becomes the most tolerant person around, it's a movie about a man who is nearing the end of his life, is forced to face his demons and sunnier side of man's true friendship where you least expect it. At the end of Gran Torino had forgiven any mistakes they may have, and was quite pleased with the film, which far exceeded my expectations. I have a feeling that Gran Torino, which has already met with strongly positive reviews (but is still described as minor Eastwood film any), will eventually become a very important part of Eastwood's filmography.
