Review:
Paperboy (2012) *** (out of 4) Lee Daniels adaptation of the novel by Peter Dexter takes a look at some swamp trash and mystery that surrounds them. Reporter Ward Jansen (Matthew McConaughey) returns to his hometown to try to solve the mystery behind the sheriff who was killed. Hillary Van Weather (John Cusack) is the death of a crime, but the journalist believes that he is innocent and pulled his younger brother (Zac Efron) and a bad wife (Nicole Kidman) in fact. Paperboy is a rather unpleasant view of a bunch of characters that I can not hate you, and its nice to see McConaughey really change your picture here, as in past years KILLER JOE. I think the best thing about the picture is that the perception and genuine feeling that the director Daniels added a picture. The biggest problem is that the script and the story that I felt was so engrossing. The whole mystery of what really happened to the sheriff seems to take a back seat and it just really seems to come and go from time to time. I'm really not sure why that was thrown into the background, and especially so with twists and turns that come at the end. With twists and turns felt the filmmakers want the story itself is important, but it is never quite easy to remove. It also seems that the director wants to shock the viewer with some pretty graphic violence and sexual situations, which are the stars up to some pretty wild things. It really looks like a movie just builds on each of these scenes, and its fair to say that they're quite comfortable. Performances from the entire cast is fantastic and with McConaughey and Nicole Kidman does wonders with their characters swamp trash. I thought they were both incredibly convincing and hats off to go for them, as they have done. I was also impressed by Efron and thought it handled pretty good character development. Cusack was great to play the bad guy and it sucks we also received great support from David Oielovo, Scott Glenn, and Macy Gray. The cinematography is also good as the notes and the atmosphere. Paperboy, it is a good showcase for its star, but I can not help but feel its a missed opportunity and a stronger story to make even better.
